Mumbai : India has given assurances to Belgium that fugitive diamantaire Mehul Choksi, if extradited, will be provided with “personal space, adequate light, ventilation and storage” in detention.
According to sources, Choksi will be lodged in Arthur Road Jail’s Barrack No. 12, which has been designated for high-profile accused.
The assurance comes as part of India’s efforts to strengthen its case for Choksi’s extradition, amid ongoing legal proceedings in Belgium. Officials clarified that the conditions will meet international human rights standards to address concerns raised by Belgian authorities.
Choksi, wanted in connection with the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, has been residing in Antigua and Barbuda since 2018 after obtaining citizenship there. India has been pursuing multiple legal channels to bring him back to face trial.
