Mumbai : The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several parts of Maharashtra, warning of extremely heavy rainfall between August 18 and 20.

Districts under high risk include Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Nashik (Ghats), Pune (Ghats), and Satara (Ghats). The Konkan belt and ghat regions are expected to receive intense downpours, raising concerns of flooding and landslides.

Impact in Mumbai and Surrounding Areas

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on Tuesday, August 19, in view of the weather threat.

Local trains, bus services, and road traffic have been disrupted due to waterlogging in several parts of the city.

Flight operations may also be affected, with airlines issuing advisories for possible delays.

Statewide Consequences

In Marathwada, heavy rains have triggered flash floods in Nanded’s Mukhed taluka, leaving four dead and five missing. Rescue operations are underway with support from the NDRF and Army.

So far, seven lives have been lost statewide, while more than 4 lakh hectares of crops have suffered damage across districts like Yavatmal, Beed, and Nanded.

The state government has begun assessing losses to provide relief and compensation to affected families and farmers.

Advisory

The IMD has urged residents in affected districts to stay indoors unless necessary and avoid travel through waterlogged or landslide-prone areas.

Alerts (red and orange) remain in force across 15–16 districts of Maharashtra until August 21
