Mumbai : In a recent notification, the Maharashtra government has declared Friday, August 8, 2025, a public holiday across Mumbai and its suburban districts in observance of Narali Purnima . The earlier holidays for Dahi Handi (Gopalkala) and Anant Chaturdashi have been replaced with observances for Narali Purnima and Jyeshtha Gauri Visarjan, respectively .
As a result, state government and semi-government offices, as well as schools, colleges, and universities in these regions, will remain closed on August 8 . Additionally, Mumbai University has postponed all examinations scheduled for that day across various faculties—including Arts, Science, Commerce, Education, Pharmacy, and Distance & Online Education (CDOE)—and will announce revised exam dates shortly. Principals and the Director of CDOE have been asked to promptly notify students of the change .
Narali Purnima is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated by coastal communities, especially fishermen, who offer coconuts and prayers to Lord Varuna—the deity of the sea—seeking his blessings for calm waters and a prosperous fishing season .
