Hindi Overtakes Marathi in BMC Schools as Student Numbers Double

Mumbai : A significant shift in language preference has emerged in Mumbai’s civic-run schools. Despite having more Marathi-medium schools, the number of students enrolled in Hindi-medium institutions is now more than double.

According to BMC data, there are 262 Marathi-medium schools with 33,729 students, while 220 Hindi-medium schools have 67,417 students. This growing gap highlights a clear trend of students favoring Hindi over Marathi.

Interestingly, Urdu-medium schools also surpass Marathi in student strength, with 188 schools educating 64,391 students. Meanwhile, English-medium schools top the list in popularity, with 149 schools and 88,295 students enrolled.

These figures reflect changing linguistic preferences among Mumbai’s diverse population and raise concerns about the future of Marathi-medium education in the city’s public school system.
