The alerts come amid persistent showers, thunder, and lightning that have already affected several pockets across the city and neighboring regions.
Mumbai’s yellow alert status indicates the possibility of heavy rain in isolated areas through June 16, while Thane faces a more severe orange alert today, suggesting widespread rainfall with potential local disruptions. Thane will be under a yellow alert tomorrow as conditions begin to ease.
Rainfall has drenched various parts of Mumbai, including Fort, Mulund, Bhandup, Powai, and Dahisar, with adjoining urban zones such as Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Dombivli, and parts of Thane also experiencing downpours and lightning strikes. The IMD attributes this wave of rainfall to a convergence of cyclonic circulations and an upper-air trough extending from Rajasthan to coastal Andhra Pradesh—factors that are fueling the monsoon’s strength across western India.
Wind speeds in coastal belts have reached up to 70 km/h, prompting authorities to issue an advisory to fishermen operating along the North Konkan coast. Fishing activities have been suspended through June 18 due to turbulent sea conditions and the risk of storms.
City officials are urging residents to stay vigilant and prepared. Precautions include securing loose outdoor objects, limiting unnecessary travel, and closely monitoring weather updates. Authorities also advise citizens to remain cautious in low-lying and flood-prone areas, particularly as the rains are expected to continue at least until mid-week.
The early monsoon burst has brought some relief from summer heat but also raised fresh concerns about waterlogging, traffic snarls, and safety hazards across Mumbai’s urban sprawl.
