Mumbai : In Navi Mumbai, police have arrested a man posing as a police officer and seized gold jewellery worth over ₹1.25 crore from his possession. The accused, identified as Sajjad Gharibsha Irani, is reportedly involved in a series of frauds across Maharashtra and has been charged under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
According to officials, Sajjad Irani has more than 100 criminal cases registered against him in different parts of the state. His usual method was to impersonate a police official, approach victims under the pretext of checking for contraband, and then flee with their valuables.
One such case came to light in Kharghar on July 31, 2025, when a senior citizen, Pawan Kumar Kejriwal (68), was duped after Irani claimed to be conducting an official search. Following the complaint, police tracked and arrested the accused.
The crime branch recovered 1,186 grams of gold jewellery, including bangles, necklaces, earrings, mangalsutras, and rings, along with fake police identity cards, Aadhaar and PAN cards, and a motorcycle used in the crimes. The total seized items are valued at approximately ₹1.25 crore.
Investigators say the arrest has helped uncover a larger network of imposters operating under Irani’s direction. Police have urged citizens to remain cautious and verify any person claiming to be a police officer before handing over valuables.
