Former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol announced his resignation from the conservative People Power Party (PPP) on Saturday via a Facebook post. His decision comes ahead of the snap presidential election scheduled for June 3, which was called following his impeachment after an unexpected declaration of martial law in December.
A recent Gallup Korea survey indicates that PPP candidate Kim Moon-soo is lagging well behind the leading Democratic Party contender, Lee Jae-myung, with 29% support compared to Lee’s 51%. Despite leaving the party, Yoon called on the public to back Kim, stating that his move was made in defense of “the free Republic of Korea.”
