Mumbai, June 19 — Former Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) corporator Mohammad Siraj Iqbal Shaikh has been booked by the Shivaji Nagar Police for organising an unauthorised motorcycle rally to mark his entry into the Samajwadi Party.
According to the FIR, Shaikh led a crowd of around 300 supporters on the evening of June 15, starting at approximately 5:45 PM. The rally, which included a procession of motorcycles and supporters on foot, travelled from Indian Oil Nagar Junction to Road No. 4 in Shivaji Nagar via the Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road. Shaikh was seen riding in an open jeep (PB 47 D 1562), accompanied by party workers.
The rally caused significant traffic congestion along the busy route as it stopped at several points. Firecrackers were reportedly set off, and slogans were raised, prompting temporary road closures and disruption to commuters. The event culminated at a stage set up in Shivaji Nagar, where Shaikh was officially inducted into the Samajwadi Party.
Following the incident, police registered a case against Shaikh and the owner of the jeep under Sections 126 and 223 of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), as well as Sections 37(1)(D) and 37(3) of the Maharashtra Police Act. Authorities stated that no prior permission had been obtained for the rally, making it a clear violation of public order norms.
Police are continuing their investigation and have warned that further legal action may be taken against others involved in the unauthorized gathering.
