Elphinstone Bridge Work to Restart With Strict Vibration Controls and 24/7 Monitoring: MMRDA

Mumbai: Construction on the Elphinstone Bridge — paused on November 13 after residents raised alarms over structural safety — will resume under enhanced safety measures and continuous monitoring, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) announced on Friday.

The work at pier points P61 and P61A was halted after nearly 50 residents objected to heavy vibrations from piling machinery, fearing damage to several century-old buildings nearby. Before the suspension, seven piles had been completed.

Following the complaints, MMRDA sought a detailed assessment from VJTI experts, who recommended steps to reduce vibrations, including lowering the piling rig’s RPM during rock socketing, reducing noise while clearing mud from the auger, and implementing round-the-clock vibration monitoring.

Officials confirmed that the contractor has been directed to follow all preventive measures. Structural health checks will also be carried out using accelerometers, crack-width gauges, and tilt sensors to monitor vibrations and any shifts in nearby buildings. Residents have been briefed on these monitoring mechanisms.

A joint inspection on November 14 — involving MMRDA officials, VJTI experts, project advisors, and local residents — helped demonstrate the testing processes and reassured the community that adequate safeguards will be maintained throughout the piling work.
