Mumbai :- The Maharashtra government has appointed senior IPS officer Deven Bharti as the new Commissioner of Police, Mumbai. He succeeds Vivek Phansalkar, who retired from service today.
An official order confirming Bharti’s appointment was issued earlier in the day. Prior to this, Bharti was serving as the Special Commissioner of Police in Mumbai. A 1994-batch Indian Police Service officer, he was earlier promoted to the rank of Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) after serving as Joint Commissioner of Police.
Bharti holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) in Mumbai, a post he held since April 2015. He has played a crucial role in several high-profile investigations, including the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks and the killing of journalist J Dey.
He is also widely credited with dismantling the Indian Mujahideen network in Maharashtra.
