Mumbai :- A section of activists and members of the Sangharsh Samiti staged a protest outside Mumbai Central Railway Station, demanding that the station be renamed after the 19th-century social reformer and philanthropist Jagannath Shankarshet, also known as Nana Shankarshet.
The protesters argued that Shankarshet played a pivotal role in Mumbai’s development, contributing to education, infrastructure, and social reforms during the British era. They believe renaming the station would honor his legacy and recognize his contributions to the city.
However, the demand has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the move as a tribute to a forgotten hero, while others question the necessity of renaming a well-established landmark.
Railway authorities have yet to respond to the demand. Similar renaming debates have arisen in the past, including the controversial change from “Bombay” to “Mumbai” and the renaming of Victoria Terminus to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
The protest highlights ongoing discussions about historical recognition and identity politics in Maharashtra. Further developments are awaited as the issue gains traction.
