New Delhi/Sanaa, July 29, 2025 — In a major diplomatic breakthrough, Yemen has officially cancelled the death sentence of Indian nurse Nimisha Priya, who was convicted in a 2017 murder case. The confirmation came from the office of Grand Mufti Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar, who played a key role in the mediation.
Nimisha, a Kerala native, had been facing capital punishment for the murder of her Yemeni business partner. Her execution, earlier scheduled for July 16, was temporarily halted after legal and religious negotiations began.
Evangelist Dr. K.A. Paul, who was actively involved in the case, announced from Sanaa that the Yemeni authorities have cancelled her sentence and that she will soon return to India. He expressed gratitude to both Indian and Yemeni officials for their cooperation.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs had previously confirmed its support in providing legal aid to Nimisha’s family and in pursuing a resolution through Yemen’s Sharia law, which allows for “blood money” compensation in such cases.
Nimisha is currently in a Sanaa prison, awaiting formalities for her release. Her daughter Mishel had earlier issued a heartfelt video appeal, asking for her mother’s return.
An official statement from the Indian government is expected soon.
