New Delhi : Congress leaders and workers across the country celebrated the 83rd birthday of party president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday with heartfelt wishes and personal gestures. One of the highlights of the celebration was a sugar-free cake prepared by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, specially made to suit Kharge’s dietary preferences.

Born in Varavatti village of Karnataka’s Bidar district, Kharge turned 83 this year. Since becoming Congress President in 2022, he has remained a respected figure in national politics.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi posted his birthday wishes on social media platform X, stating:
“Wishing Congress President @kharge ji a very happy birthday! Your leadership, commitment, and dedication to the people of India inspire us all. May you be blessed with good health and happiness.”

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate shared a touching behind-the-scenes moment, writing on X:
“Kharge ji avoids sweets. Today is his birthday. So Priyanka ji made a sugar-free cake with dates for him. Taking care of our elders with such small things is true respect and love. These are our values.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also extended birthday greetings to the veteran leader, tweeting:
“Best wishes to the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Shri Mallikarjun Kharge Ji on his birthday. Praying for his long and healthy life.”

Before entering politics, Kharge practiced law and started his public life as a student leader and General Secretary of the Students’ Union in Gulbarga. He served nine terms in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly before being elected to the Lok Sabha in 2009.
