Mumbai :- The proposed ₹229 crore jetty project in Colaba is facing escalating resistance as residents gain backing from prominent political figures across party lines. Following objections raised by local Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant, BJP MLA and Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar, and Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi, Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora of Shiv Sena has now voiced concerns over the plan.
Deora, a former Colaba MP and current resident, wrote to Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, highlighting apprehensions about the jetty’s proposed location between the Radio Club and Gateway of India.
*”While improving water transport infrastructure is essential for Mumbai’s growth, the chosen site could create severe congestion and safety risks given the heavy tourist footfall at Gateway of India,”* Deora stated. He suggested alternative sites like Ferry Wharf (Bhaucha Dhakka) or Ballard Estate to ease pressure on the heritage landmark.
The project has been stalled since March 29, when residents raised objections during a meeting with Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane. The Clean and Heritage Colaba Residents Association has sought 27 key documents, including feasibility reports and approvals, from the Maritime Board.
At a protest meeting on April 5, over 300 residents were joined by Narwekar, Sawant, and Azmi. If authorities fail to provide the requested documents, residents plan to approach the Bombay High Court with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL).
With political support growing, the future of the jetty project remains uncertain as stakeholders push for transparency and reconsideration of its location.
