Cloudburst Triggers Flash Flood in Uttarkashi’s Dharali Village , At Least 4 Dead, Many Feared Trapped

On August 5, 2025:- a sudden cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district unleashed devastating flash floods and landslides in Dharali village, a critical stopover on the Gangotri pilgrimage route. The deluge struck with immense force, sweeping away homes, hotels, shops, and homestays in moments .

Authorities have confirmed at least four mortalities, while up to 10–12 individuals are feared trapped under debris. Locals estimate that 20–25 hotels and homestays may have been washed away, with additional infrastructure damage in surrounding areas like Banala Patti .

Rescue and relief operations are underway, involving the Indian Army, SDRF, NDRF, and local authorities. Emergency machinery, sniffer dogs, and aerial support have been mobilised to locate survivors. Rough terrain and continuing rain have hindered efforts, prompting authorities to issue warnings and helpline numbers for affected residents and travellers .

A second cloudburst hit Sukhi Top near Dharali on the same day, further disrupting rescue work and adding to the destruction. A red alert for heavy rainfall has been issued by the IMD, valid through August 10, raising fears of additional landslides and flash floods in the fragile Himalayan terrain .

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami called the incident “extremely sad and painful,” assuring that no effort will be spared in rescue and relief operations. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have offered full support and resources from the central government .
