A dummy candidate was caught impersonating a student during a Bachelor of Education (BEd) exam at the Government College of Education in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, leading to the registration of a criminal case for impersonation and cheating.
According to police, the incident took place on April 30, between 2 pm and 3:30 pm, at the college located on Railway Station Road in the Padampura area. A formal complaint was lodged late Wednesday night at Vedantnagar police station under Sections 319 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 7 of the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1982.
Inspector Pravina Yadav told that police teams are currently working to trace and apprehend the suspects. The complaint was filed by Dr. Bhagyashree Subhedar (51), a professor and the chief of the exam centre. Despite catching the impersonator during the exam, the First Information Report (FIR) was delayed.
“In her complaint, she mentioned that the suspect arrived late and his behaviour immediately raised suspicion,” said Yadav. “Upon examining his hall ticket, discrepancies were found, which led to further checks that confirmed the impersonation.”
Surprisingly, the invigilator did not report the incident to police immediately. Instead, a detailed report was prepared and forwarded to the department and university authorities. A complaint was filed only after a formal resolution was passed.
Police said the dummy candidate had conspired with a student enrolled at Marathwada College of Education, located on the Maulana Azad College campus, to write the Urdu teaching methodology paper on the student’s behalf. Fortunately, the impersonation was detected before the exam concluded.
Officials from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University have also launched an internal inquiry into the matter.
