Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level security meeting at his residence on Sunday, May 11, amid ongoing developments following the ceasefire understanding between India and Pakistan. Top officials from the defence, home, and external affairs ministries were present at the meeting, according to official sources.

The ceasefire announcement came after three days of intense military exchanges between the two nations. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed on Saturday evening that an “understanding” had been reached to halt “military action” and “firing” on both sides.

Despite the announcement, reports of cross-border shelling by Pakistan emerged shortly after. A Border Security Force (BSF) official confirmed heavy firing continued until 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in several areas along the Jammu border, with India delivering a commensurate response.

Government sources clarified that while military actions have paused, the ceasefire understanding does not impact several recent measures India has undertaken in response to Pakistan’s role in cross-border terrorism. These include diplomatic and trade-related actions following the Pahalgam attack.

Addressing the media, Commodore Raghu R. Nair emphasized that every act of aggression by Pakistan has been met with force, and any future escalation would be dealt with decisively. His comments followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s social media announcement that India and Pakistan had agreed to an immediate ceasefire. Shortly after, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries had agreed to halt all firing and military activities.

In Kashmir, residents experienced a rare calm Saturday night, with no fresh violations reported across the Line of Control. In Rawalpora, locals expressed relief, with one resident stating, “It’s been days since we’ve had a peaceful night. We hope this silence lasts.”

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Punjab’s Amritsar district announced that citizens may resume normal routines following a precautionary siren issued on Sunday morning.
