Mumbai : Traffic on the Mumbai Coastal Road came to a grinding halt on Thursday morning after a car caught fire inside the southbound section of the tunnel near Tardeo. The incident forced authorities to stop movement in both directions, leading to heavy congestion.
According to Mumbai Traffic Police, thick smoke from the blaze prompted officials to temporarily shut the stretch. “Traffic movement is stopped at Coastal Road (Tardeo) southbound and northbound due to a car fire,” the police posted on X.
Two fire engines were rushed to the site from the Breach Candy exit, which was later closed to vehicles. Firefighters quickly doused the flames, preventing further damage. No casualties were reported.
The sudden disruption triggered chaos during peak morning hours, with long queues of vehicles stretching for kilometers. Commuters stuck in traffic shared visuals and updates on social media, showing vehicles being turned back from the tunnel and expressing frustration over the prolonged delay.
Traffic police diverted vehicles to adjoining roads to manage the situation and ease congestion.
