Mumbai : The Bombay High Court has cancelled the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (MERC) recent order that increased electricity tariffs across the state. The court ruled that MERC failed to follow due process by not allowing consumers and stakeholders to present their objections before approving the hike.
With this judgment, the earlier “Multi Year Tariff” (MYT) order issued on March 28, 2025, will continue to remain in effect. The court has directed MERC to conduct a fresh review of the tariff proposal only after holding proper consultations with all concerned parties.
MERC and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) are expected to challenge the ruling in the Supreme Court. The High Court has granted a four-week stay on its order, allowing time for the commission to respond or appeal.
The decision has brought relief to electricity consumers across Maharashtra, many of whom had opposed the tariff hike citing rising household expenses.
