Bombay High Court Declines Plea to Ban Animal Slaughter During Paryushan, Cautions Against Setting Religious Precedents

Mumbai:- The Bombay High Court has rejected a petition filed by the Jain community seeking a 9-day ban on animal slaughter during the upcoming Paryushan Parv. The court stated that granting such a request could set a precedent leading to similar demands from followers of other religions.
During the hearing, the court remarked, “If we start allowing such religious-based bans, tomorrow every religion may come forward with similar demands.” The plea had requested a temporary closure of slaughterhouses across Mumbai in observance of the Jain holy period.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with members of the Jain community expressing disappointment, while others welcomed the court’s emphasis on maintaining secular governance and public policy neutrality.
