Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) cleared more than 3,000 metric tonnes (MT) of additional garbage generated during the Diwali festivities this year. Between October 18 and 21, the city’s daily waste output spiked to 7,300 MT, compared to the regular 6,900 MT, largely due to increased celebrations and firecracker residue.

Over the past decade, Mumbai’s daily waste generation ranged between 9,000–10,000 MT. However, the BMC successfully reduced it to around 6,900 MT through measures like segregation of dry and wet waste, establishment of dry waste collection centres, and mandatory processing units for bulk waste generators.

Currently, the Kanjur Marg facility handles the majority of the city’s waste, while Deonar manages about 10%. Of the additional waste collected during Diwali, approximately 2,075 MT was disposed of at these landfills, with another 1,000 MT still being processed from transfer stations.

Deputy Municipal Commissioner (SWM) Kiran Dighavkar praised the efforts of BMC’s sanitation workers, who worked tirelessly through the festive season to manage the massive waste load. He also lauded the cooperation of Mumbai’s residents for helping maintain cleanliness during the celebrations.
