Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a one-month ultimatum to all developers across the city, mandating the installation of sensor-based air pollution monitoring systems at construction sites. The move aims to ensure real-time monitoring and public access to air quality data.
The directive, issued in June following a Bombay High Court order in Suo Motu PIL No. 3 of 2023, requires developers to install approved PM2.5 and PM10 monitoring devices. Despite this, only 44 percent of the city’s approximately 1,200 ongoing construction sites have complied so far.
The BMC has shortlisted 13 companies that supply the approved equipment. Developers are required to procure air quality monitors from these vendors, which must display real-time data on LED boards and transmit it to BMC’s centralised server for surveillance.
Officials warned that non-compliance could lead to strict actions, including suspension of project approvals, stop-work notices, financial penalties, or complete site shutdowns.
A senior BMC official stated, “Developers who fail to comply within the next month will face severe action as per the directive.”
