Mumbai :
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) G North Ward will conduct a Pulse Polio Immunisation Drive on Sunday, October 12, 2025, to safeguard children under five years of age from poliomyelitis.
A coordination meeting was held at the ward office today by the Health Department to review preparations for the campaign. Dr. Balasaheb Kawale, Medical Officer of Health, G North Ward, announced that special vaccination booths will be set up across Mahim, Dadar, and Dharavi to ensure maximum coverage.
Appealing to parents, Dr. Kawale said, “Just two drops can protect a child for life. Every parent’s small effort will help us build a safer, healthier G North Ward.” He urged all citizens to take their children to the nearest polio booth and ensure they receive the oral polio vaccine (OPV) dose.
Although India was declared polio-free on March 27, 2014, Dr. Kawale emphasised that the campaign remains crucial since neighbouring countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan continue to report fresh cases. “This campaign must continue for a few more years to ensure India remains polio-free,” he added.
The poliovirus is a highly contagious infection that attacks the nervous system and can lead to permanent paralysis or death in severe cases. It spreads mainly through the fecal-oral route—via contaminated food, water, or hands—and, less commonly, through saliva droplets from an infected person.
The BMC has urged residents to participate actively and help protect every child in the community.
