BEST to Study Commuter Travel Trends After Launch of Mumbai Metro Aqua Line

Mumbai’s transport utility, the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), has started a detailed study to assess how the newly operational Aqua Line metro has affected daily commuter travel patterns across the city.

The Aqua Line, which became fully operational on October 8 after the launch of the final stretch between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Worli, is expected to change how Mumbaikars travel between key business and residential hubs. A partial section of the line had already been running since May 10.

According to BEST officials, the study aims to determine whether commuters are shifting from buses to the metro, particularly on routes that run parallel to the new metro corridor. Based on the findings, BEST plans to adjust or rationalize bus services, enhance last-mile connectivity, and improve coordination between metro stations and nearby areas.

In response to changing travel trends, BEST recently announced an increase in air-conditioned bus services. From November 1, 23 major routes now have additional AC buses, and one new AC route, “A-101,” has started operating between World Trade Centre (Cuffe Parade) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). Eight routes have also been converted entirely to AC service.

Officials said the data collected after the Diwali vacation—when schools, colleges, and offices reopen—will help in understanding the real impact of the Aqua Line on passenger numbers. The survey’s outcome is expected to guide future decisions on optimizing BEST’s bus routes and improving Mumbai’s overall public transport efficiency.
