As Mumbai prepares for the monsoon, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has listed 134 buildings as structurally unsafe in its 2025 pre-monsoon audit.
These buildings fall under the ‘C1’ category, meaning they pose an immediate risk of collapse, especially during heavy rainfall. The highest number of such buildings is reported in Bandra and Khar (H/West Ward) and Goregaon (P/South Ward) — with 15 dangerous buildings each.
What’s alarming is that 77 of these buildings are still occupied, putting residents at serious risk. The remaining 56 structures are tied up in legal issues or under court stays, delaying evacuation.
To ensure compliance, the BMC has begun cutting off water and electricity in several buildings and has served 15-day notices for evacuation.
Though the numbers have declined from 387 in 2023 to 134 in 2025, thanks to demolition and relocation drives, risks remain across multiple wards, including:
Andheri East (K/East Ward) – 11 buildings
Ghatkopar (N Ward) – 11 buildings
Andheri West (K/West Ward) – 10 buildings
Chembur (H/East Ward) – 7 buildings
Malad (P/North Ward) – 7 buildings
Bandra and Khar West ( H/West Ward) : 15 buildings
Goregaon (P/South Ward): 15 buildings
With heavy rains approaching, the urgency to relocate families and reinforce infrastructure is more critical than ever.
