Bairstow, Gleeson Likely to Join MI as Playoff Replacements in IPL 2025

With the IPL 2025 playoffs approaching, Mumbai Indians are reportedly in advanced talks with England stars Jonny Bairstow and Richard Gleeson to step in as potential replacements for Will Jacks and Ryan Rickelton. The move, however, will only materialize if the franchise qualifies for the final stage of the tournament.

Both Jacks and Rickelton are set to depart the IPL to fulfill international duties. Rickelton will join South Africa for the World Test Championship final against Australia, which begins on June 11. Jacks, meanwhile, is part of England’s squad for their ODI series against the West Indies, starting May 29 — the same day Qualifier 1 is scheduled.

MI’s Qualification Push

Currently sitting at 14 points from 12 matches, Mumbai Indians are still in contention for a playoff spot. They must win their remaining fixtures — against Delhi Capitals (May 21) and Punjab Kings (May 26) — to improve their chances. Both opponents are also competing for a place in the top four, making the upcoming games must-win contests.

Rickelton and Jacks’ Contributions

Rickelton has been a standout performer this season, featuring in all 12 matches and scoring 336 runs — making him Mumbai’s second-highest run-getter. Jacks has played 11 matches, scoring 195 runs and taking 5 wickets. His all-round skills have earned him two Player of the Match awards.

Why Bairstow and Gleeson?

Bairstow brings valuable IPL experience, having previously represented Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings. He was instrumental in PBKS’ record-breaking chase of 262 against KKR last season, scoring a brilliant century. Overall, Bairstow has notched up 1,589 runs in 50 IPL appearances.

Gleeson, a right-arm pacer, played two matches for Chennai Super Kings last season. While his IPL numbers are limited, he was among the top performers in the SA20 2025, claiming 14 wickets and finishing as the tournament’s second-highest wicket-taker.
