Mumbai, September 3, 2025:- Arun Gawli, the 76-year-old ex-gangster and politician, walked out of Nagpur Central Jail today after spending over 17 years behind bars. His release follows a Supreme Court order granting him bail in connection with the 2007 murder of Shiv Sena corporator Kamlakar Jamsandekar.
The Supreme Court bench, headed by Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh, cited Gawli’s advanced age and prolonged incarceration in its decision. Bail was granted subject to conditions prescribed by the trial court. After completing all formalities, Gawli was released at around 12:30 PM IST.
Gawli was convicted in 2012 for the murder of Jamsandekar and had been serving a life sentence under the Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA). He had challenged the Bombay High Court’s 2019 verdict, which upheld his life sentence, making his release the result of a long-drawn legal battle and multiple appeals.
Known popularly as “Daddy,” Gawli rose to prominence from Mumbai’s Dagdi Chawl area and later founded the Akhil Bharatiya Sena. He also served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Mumbai’s Chinchpokli constituency from 2004 to 2009.
Family members, legal representatives, and supporters gathered at the jail to welcome him upon his release.
