The horrifying deepfake incident involving Assam-based actor and influencer Archita Phukan has sent shockwaves across the nation, raising serious concerns over the unchecked rise of AI-generated fake content. The case took an even more disturbing turn when it was revealed that her ex-boyfriend was allegedly involved in circulating the video, making it not just a technological crime but also a deeply personal betrayal.
A deepfake video portraying Archita in a sexually explicit and fabricated scene went viral on social media. The video, created using artificial intelligence, maliciously altered her appearance and actions, causing immense mental distress and public humiliation.
In a tearful public statement, Archita condemned the video and expressed deep concern about the rising threat of such technologies. “This isn’t just about me — this could happen to any woman. What’s worse is knowing that someone I once trusted may have played a role in spreading it,” she said.
According to early reports, her former boyfriend is suspected of either creating or actively circulating the video, possibly as an act of revenge or harassment. Police sources say they are closely investigating his digital activity and communication history. If found guilty, he could face charges under cybercrime and IT laws, along with defamation and mental harassment.
Cybersecurity experts warn that this incident must serve as a wake-up call for India. With deepfake tools becoming easier to access and use, there is an urgent need for stronger laws, faster legal remedies, and digital safety awareness, especially for women.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has taken up the matter, and a formal probe is underway to identify the creator and distributors of the video.
This case not only exposes the dark side of AI misuse but also the emotional trauma caused when technology meets personal vendetta. India must act now to prevent more lives from being shattered.
