In a significant revelation, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has disclosed that both engines of Air India flight AI 171 shut down just moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport. The findings were part of the preliminary report into the June 2025 crash involving the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.
According to the report, the flight, which was en route to London, experienced a sudden loss of thrust in both engines shortly after becoming airborne. The data indicates that fuel supply to both engines was unexpectedly cut off seconds after takeoff, causing the aircraft to lose power and crash during the return attempt.
Fortunately, due to the swift action by the crew, major casualties were avoided, though several passengers sustained injuries. The AAIB has listed “fuel control malfunction or human error” as a possible cause under investigation.
The report highlights the need for a deeper probe into cockpit communication, fuel system functionality, and possible mechanical anomalies. The final investigation report is expected to take several more months, with further analysis of black box data and simulations underway.
Authorities have assured that safety audits across the Air India fleet have been initiated to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
