At least three people lost their lives and several others were rescued after a portion of the Gambhira bridge collapsed on Wednesday morning, causing multiple vehicles to plunge into the Mahisagar river.
The incident occurred around 7:30 AM on the bridge located in Gujarat’s Anand district, approximately 25 kilometers from Vadodara. The bridge serves as a key route connecting Central Gujarat to the Saurashtra region.
According to Gujarat Health Minister Rushikesh Patel, five to six vehicles fell into the river following the collapse of a slab on the bridge. “Three persons have died and five others have been rescued,” Patel confirmed, adding that the bridge was built in 1985 and maintained periodically.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has ordered a technical probe into the incident and directed experts to visit the site immediately. Emergency services, including police, disaster response teams, and the fire brigade, were rushed to the location after locals reported the collapse.
“A portion of the bridge gave way suddenly. At least three vehicles fell into the river. We have launched rescue operations and pulled 10 people out so far,” a fire brigade officer said.
Rescue operations are ongoing as authorities work to locate and assist any remaining victims
