Navi Mumbai, June 18, 2025 — In the wake of severe waterlogging that paralyzed parts of Belapur on May 26, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has directed urgent flood prevention measures to protect low-lying areas from future high tide and monsoon impacts.

On Tuesday, Dr. Shinde conducted a field inspection of the holding pond and pump house at Sector 12, CBD Belapur, accompanied by senior municipal officials. The visit was aimed at assessing progress on corrective actions taken since the late-May deluge, which left Sectors 4, 5, 6, and 11 heavily inundated and disrupted daily life.

As part of immediate interventions, the Commissioner reviewed the installation of an additional high-capacity water extraction pump, the setup of a backup power generator, and the ongoing fast-tracked construction of a new pump house intended to strengthen the drainage response system in the area.

Dr. Shinde also ordered the leveling of land around the holding pond to boost its storage capacity and called for consistent desilting at pipe outlets. He emphasized the need for routine maintenance of the flap gate wall — a crucial component in preventing tidal water backflow during high tide.

Senior officials present during the inspection included City Engineer Shirish Ardavad, Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde, Zone 1 Deputy Commissioner Somnath Potre, Executive Engineers Madan Waghchaude and Vasant Padghan, and Assistant Commissioner for Belapur ward, Dr. Amol Palve.

The NMMC aims to complete the outlined mitigation works before the next major rainfall spell, ensuring that the city is better equipped to manage future flood risks.
