Celebrations over Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s long-awaited IPL 2025 victory turned into a night of mourning after a stampede outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium claimed 11 lives and left more than 50 injured.
What was meant to be a historic and joyous moment quickly descended into chaos as thousands of fans gathered near the stadium to celebrate with their team. The crowd, far larger than expected, surged toward the gates in hopes of catching a glimpse of RCB players. According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated when barricades collapsed under pressure, triggering panic and a crush.
Among the deceased are women and at least one child. Many of the injured are being treated at nearby hospitals for injuries ranging from fractures to trauma caused by crowd pressure. Emergency services and local police struggled to manage the overwhelmed situation, highlighting serious lapses in planning and crowd control.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident and whether adequate safety measures were in place for an event of this magnitude. Initial reports suggest that there was no structured crowd management plan, despite clear signs of overcapacity.
Karnataka Chief Minister has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and announced compensation for those killed or injured in the tragedy. In a show of respect, all official RCB celebration events have been canceled.
