Mumbai, June 2, 2025 — Customs officials at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport intercepted a wildlife trafficking attempt, recovering 47 exotic snakes and 3 turtles from a passenger arriving from Bangkok.
The seizure took place during a routine baggage check after officers grew suspicious of the traveler’s behavior. Upon inspection, the reptiles were discovered concealed inside the luggage, packed in conditions deemed both inhumane and illegal.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the animals are non-native and possibly endangered, making their import a violation of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and international wildlife trafficking laws. Authorities suspect this may be part of a larger smuggling network, and further inquiries are underway.
The recovered reptiles have been handed over to the Forest Department for medical assessment and rehabilitation. Officials confirmed that the animals will be examined by veterinary experts to determine their species and health status.
Customs authorities have reaffirmed their zero-tolerance policy toward wildlife smuggling and urged travelers to abide by conservation laws. The incident underscores growing concerns around illegal exotic pet trade via international air routes.
