Thane, May 25, 2025 — A 21-year-old resident of Mumbra succumbed to complications related to diabetes after testing positive for COVID-19 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital in Kalwa, making it the first fatality reported in Thane during the current rise in infections.

According to hospital sources, the young man was admitted on May 22 with a critical condition caused by diabetic ketoacidosis—a severe complication of diabetes. He later tested positive for COVID-19 on May 24 and passed away early the next morning. Health officials have confirmed that while COVID-19 was a contributing factor, the primary cause of death was complications from his pre-existing condition.

This incident has drawn attention to the vulnerability of individuals with serious health conditions amid the ongoing spread of COVID-19. In Thane, there are currently 18 active cases. Most patients are recovering at home, and only one other patient remains hospitalized in stable condition.

At the state level, Maharashtra recorded 47 new cases on Saturday, with Mumbai alone accounting for 30. Four deaths have been reported across the state this week, each involving patients with significant underlying health issues.

In response to the developing situation, the Thane Municipal Corporation has reassured residents that adequate medical infrastructure is in place, including testing and treatment facilities. Nationwide, the Union Health Ministry continues to monitor emerging variants, including LF.7 and NB.1.8. However, these variants have not been classified as high-risk, and the majority of current cases are reported to be mild.

Hospitals across major urban centers, including Mumbai, Delhi, and regions of Kerala, have been instructed to remain alert and ensure the availability of oxygen support and intensive care beds if needed. Health experts emphasize that the prevailing variants are primarily resulting in flu-like symptoms and are unlikely to trigger severe illness in otherwise healthy individuals.

As authorities remain vigilant, the public is urged to continue observing basic preventive measures, especially individuals with pre-existing health concerns.
