The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and its surrounding districts—Thane, Raigad, and Palghar—forecasting moderate rainfall through Wednesday. The advisory follows increasing pre-monsoon activity in the region, with more showers expected this week.
On Monday, Mumbai recorded a high of 34°C and a low of 27°C. Temperatures are expected to drop slightly over the next few days due to increased rainfall intensity. Light rains were predicted for Monday night, with heavier showers likely to develop on Tuesday.
“A low-level trough has disrupted wind patterns, creating favourable conditions for pre-monsoon rains,” said Shubhangi Bhute, director of IMD Mumbai. “We expect the monsoon to hit the Andaman region by May 13, with Kerala likely to see rains by May 28.”
The rainfall also contributed to improved air quality in the city. According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 52, categorized as ‘Satisfactory’.
Mumbai has already surpassed its typical pre-monsoon rainfall for the season. Since March 1, Santacruz has recorded 33.9 mm of rain, slightly above the seasonal average of 32.5 mm. Colaba registered 48.7 mm, compared to the seasonal norm of 46.7 mm.
The IMD had previously issued a yellow alert for four consecutive days last week. This renewed alert underscores ongoing atmospheric instability, signaling an early and wet build-up to the monsoon season.
