The Indian Institute of Creative Technology (IICT) is being developed by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), as a national centre of excellence.
Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the launch of IICT in Mumbai on Thursday, aiming to give a major boost to the creative economy and the country’s entertainment and digital media industries.
While addressing the World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES-2025) in Mumbai, Vaishnaw stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allocated Rs 400 crore for the establishment of the institute. The Maharashtra government has provided the land for the project.
“Global tech giants such as NVIDIA, Google, Apple, Microsoft, Star India, Meta, and Adobe are collaborating to make IICT a world-class institution. WAVES and IICT will further strengthen Mumbai’s role as a key centre in the global creative ecosystem,” said Vaishnaw at the JIO World Centre, Mumbai.
Modelled along the lines of prestigious institutes like the IITs and IIMs, IICT is envisioned as a premier hub for education, training, innovation, and research in the fields of animation, visual effects, gaming, comics, and extended reality (AVGC-XR).
The institute is to be established in two phases:
Phase 1 will be located at Peddar Road, featuring state-of-the-art facilities such as virtual production setups, immersive studios, animation and gaming labs, editing and sound suites, and smart classrooms.
Phase 2 will be developed on a 10-acre campus inside Film City, Goregaon.
To enhance accessibility and decentralize educational opportunities, the government also plans to establish regional centres across India in later phases.
IICT will focus on training, incubation, innovation, R&D, and policy development, aiming to create vast opportunities for emerging creators and entrepreneurs in the media and entertainment sector.
The four-day WAVES-2025 summit, designed to showcase India’s creative industry, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the JIO World Centre. Over 100 leading exhibitors — including Netflix, Amazon, Google, Meta, Sony, Reliance, Adobe, Tata, Balaji Telefilms, Dharma Productions, Saregama, and Yash Raj Films — are participating, along with next-generation innovators such as JetSynthesys, Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), Free Stream Technologies, Neural Garage, and Fractal Picture.
