Mumbai : The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has allowed citizens to submit objections and suggestions online after Opposition leaders raised concerns about alleged discrepancies in the draft voter lists released on Thursday.
Deadline for Objections: November 27
The SEC has announced that objections can be filed until November 27. The draft voter lists have been published for ongoing municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, as well as the upcoming municipal corporation polls.
Citizens Can Check and Verify Details Online
Residents can now verify their names through the SEC portal, file objections online, or approach their respective municipal commissioners for corrections related to clerical errors in ward allocation.
Opposition Alleges Irregularities
The move follows serious allegations from the Opposition. Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray claimed that several voters had been shifted to different wards, particularly in areas where the BJP is considered weak. He also pointed out that the lists are not machine-readable, forcing citizens to manually scan through nearly 45,000 names.
Lists to Be Used for 29 Municipal Corporations
The draft lists—prepared with July 1 as the qualifying date—will be used for elections across 29 municipal corporations in the state, the SEC confirmed.
Assembly Rolls Used as Base; Only Clerical Errors Can Be Corrected
The voter rolls from last year’s Assembly elections serve as the base for these lists. The SEC clarified that no additions, deletions, or address corrections will be entertained at this stage. Only clerical mistakes—such as incorrect ward allocation or missing names despite being present in the Assembly rolls—can be challenged.
The SEC said the ward-wise lists must reflect the Assembly rolls exactly, and urged citizens to verify their entries before the deadline.
