BMC’s Negligence Exposed: Garbage Overflows Onto Roads Near Schools in Govandi

Mumbai : In Govandi’s Shivaji Nagar area, residents are outraged as piles of garbage have begun spilling onto the main roads near local schools, exposing serious lapses in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) waste management.

According to reports, the problem is concentrated near Road No. 5, beside Gita Vikas School — an area that once served as a dumping ground. Locals allege that although the spot was fenced off, the gate has either been removed or stolen, allowing waste to accumulate again.

Sajid Khan, a resident of the area, stated that this issue has persisted for years, worsening during the monsoon when rainwater mixes with garbage, making it impossible for pedestrians to walk. Children from nearby schools, including Anjuman Inayatul Islam Urdu High School, are forced to step onto the busy roadway to avoid the filth, putting their safety at risk.

After Khan raised the matter on social media on October 23, the BMC’s M-East Ward responded, assuring that immediate action would be taken. Officials have since confirmed that an inspection will be carried out and necessary measures implemented to prevent further dumping.

The situation has once again highlighted long-standing negligence in maintaining cleanliness in Govandi, raising concerns about public health and the safety of schoolchildren in the area.
