Mumbai : In a major success for Mumbai Police, the Kalachowki Police have arrested Sajjad Garibshah Irani alias Pathan (46), a notorious member of the infamous Irani gang known for duping unsuspecting citizens through elaborate fraud schemes.
Police revealed that a staggering 162 criminal cases have been registered against Irani across multiple jurisdictions in Maharashtra and other states.
The latest case that led to his arrest occurred on October 5, when 77-year-old Sumitra Ramkrishna Samparg was tricked by two men who pretended to warn her about nearby thieves. They convinced her to remove her gold ornaments for safety and, through sleight of hand, replaced them with fake items before fleeing with the real jewellery worth several lakhs.
Following her complaint, a case was registered under relevant sections 318(4) and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Acting under the supervision of DCP (Zone 4) Ragasudha R., a team led by Senior Inspector Vijaykumar Shinde, API Amit Bhosale, and PSI Dhananjay Vyavahare launched a meticulous investigation.
Officers examined over 150 CCTV cameras to track the suspects, eventually identifying Sajjad Irani as the prime accused. Acting on intelligence inputs, a police team, with the help of the Local Crime Branch (LCB) Akola, laid a trap and arrested him from the Irani settlement in Akola.
Authorities confirmed that Irani has a long history of involvement in thefts, cheating, and tricking elderly victims using similar deceptive methods. Police are now probing his role in several other unsolved cases linked to the Irani gang’s widespread criminal network.
