Mumbai : Continuous heavy rainfall has forced the Maharashtra government to close schools and colleges in Palghar and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar districts as a precaution against rising flood risks.
The India Meteorological Department has issued orange alerts for several districts, including Pune, Raigad, Thane, Mumbai, Palghar, Nashik, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, warning of very heavy to extremely heavy downpours.
A week-long spell of incessant rain has already led to flooding in multiple areas, prompting the state education department to suspend classes to safeguard students.
In Jālnā district, the overflowing Jayakwadi dam has triggered the evacuation of nearly 10,000 residents from low-lying villages. Evacuees are being housed in schools and community centers, where food and essential supplies are being provided.
Local authorities remain on high alert, closely monitoring water levels and coordinating relief efforts with state agencies to minimize damage and ensure public safety.
