Mumbai: The redevelopment of Kamathipura, one of South Mumbai’s oldest neighborhoods, has hit a roadblock as the tender process initiated by MHADA’s Mumbai Building Repair and Reconstruction Board remains incomplete even after three months.
The tender, first issued on June 12 under the Construction and Development Agency (C&D) guidelines, has been extended multiple times at the request of interested companies. The latest deadline, earlier set for September 24, has now been pushed to September 30.
Spread across 34 acres, Kamathipura houses 475 cessed buildings, 163 non-cessed buildings, 15 reconstructed buildings, and PMGP structures. Many of these buildings, which began deteriorating after 1990, are now deemed irreparable. The area is also home to 6,073 residents, 1,342 non-residents, 15 places of worship, two educational institutions, and four government offices.
The delay in the tender process is stalling the urgently needed redevelopment project. Whether the tenders will finally be opened on September 30 or face another extension remains uncertain.
