Dombivli : In a major relief to residents, the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has put on hold its planned demolition drive against one of the 65 illegal buildings in Dombivli. The action was scheduled to take place today, Tuesday, September 9, at Samarth Complex.
The move comes after a meeting convened by the Urban Development Department in Mumbai, where KDMC officials were summoned. Tension had gripped residents upon learning about the demolition. Many staged protests demanding action against the builders who duped them rather than making them homeless.
Residents had even warned that they would resort to extreme steps, including self-immolation, if their homes were razed. Shiv Sena (Thackeray faction) district chief Dipesh Mhatre also issued a warning of strong agitation if demolition went ahead.
The controversy began when it was revealed that 65 buildings in Dombivli were constructed illegally using forged documents submitted to MahaRERA. By the time this came to light, several families had already purchased and moved into these flats. KDMC had earlier issued eviction notices, leading some residents to approach the Bombay High Court.
For now, the demolition action has been suspended, bringing temporary respite to hundreds of families living in these disputed buildings.
