Mumbai: In a major boost to suburban rail travel, the Maharashtra government has approved a proposal for 238 air-conditioned local trains, paving the way for tenders to be issued within this month. The ambitious project, with an estimated cost of ₹21,000 crore, will introduce metro-style trains equipped with cushioned seats, mobile charging ports, infotainment screens, and advanced air-conditioning systems.
Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) CMD Vilas S. Wadekar welcomed the decision, noting that the approval under MUTP Phase 3B will ease congestion on the busiest corridors by separating suburban and mainline traffic.
The new rakes will feature higher powering capacity (50% compared to the current 33%), ensuring faster acceleration and deceleration, thereby reducing stoppage delays. Designed as fully walkthrough vestibule trains, they will also provide dedicated luggage space.
MRVC will issue tenders for 2,856 coaches, configured in 12, 15, and potentially 18-coach formations depending on corridor needs. The first prototype is expected about 2.5 years after tender allotment, with full-scale production spanning nearly seven years.
The trains will run at speeds up to 130 km/h, significantly higher than the existing 100–110 km/h limit. Two new EMU car sheds at Bhivpuri (Central Railway) and Vangaon (Western Railway) will support the operations, to be managed by private manufacturers.
