Navi Mumbai: In a step towards eco-friendly celebrations, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has launched an initiative to convert floral offerings (nirmalya) collected during Ganesh idol immersions into organic fertilizer.
After the one-and-a-half-day immersions, over 534 kilograms of flowers were collected from three major immersion sites. The floral waste was transported to the Turbhe composting project, where it will be processed into organic manure to support greenery across the city.
To encourage sustainable practices, NMMC placed separate containers for wet and dry nirmalya at 22 natural and 143 artificial ponds. Several NGOs, including the Dr. Shri Nanasaheb Dharmadhikari Foundation, joined the drive by collecting floral offerings at various immersion sites.
Municipal officials emphasized that the project not only helps generate eco-friendly fertilizer but also prevents water pollution caused by dumping flowers in water bodies.
The civic body also conducted awareness drives promoting eco-friendly idols and decorations, with active citizens being honored as “Environment Friends.”
NMMC’s initiative stands out as a model for sustainable celebrations, balancing tradition with environmental responsibility.
