Mumbai : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) conducted an intensive overnight cleanliness and sanitation drive at Azad Maidan and adjoining areas to maintain hygiene amid the ongoing Maratha reservation protest.
More than 1,000 sanitation workers were deployed in three shifts, with over 400 working tirelessly during the night shift (10 PM–6 AM). To ensure sanitation, 450 portable toilet seats—including 100 newly added units—were made available. The Mumbai Fire Brigade installed a tower with 40 floodlights to enhance visibility.
Modern suction machines and jet spray equipment were used for cleaning toilet facilities, while 2,000 dustbin bags and garbage collection bins were distributed across the protest site. Additionally, 25 water tankers, including mini tankers, were arranged for drinking water supply.
A dedicated medical unit remained functional at Azad Maidan, where more than 4,000 protestors availed medical care on September 1. Mechanical road cleaning was carried out using Skid Steer Loader (Bobcat) machines, with waste directly loaded into two mini compactors and one large compactor. Roads were subsequently washed to ensure complete cleanliness.
The extensive efforts reflect the administration’s commitment to public health and sanitation during large-scale gatherings.
