Mumbai : Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has officially announced a major project to landscape and beautify 53 hectares (130 acres) of reclaimed land along Mumbai’s Coastal Road. The initiative, named Coastal Road Gardens, will be undertaken by the Reliance Foundation as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.

The announcement was made during RIL’s 48th Annual General Meeting. The project will feature landscaped gardens, plazas, cycling and pedestrian tracks, and abundant trees and flowers, creating a “green lung” for Mumbai, according to Nita Ambani, head of the Reliance Foundation.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had floated an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the 30-year development and maintenance of the Coastal Road open spaces, which include gardens, parks, water bodies, and pedestrian pathways. Initially, BMC planned to handle the project in-house, but escalating costs of ₹400 crore led to outsourcing under the EoI process. Reliance emerged as the sole applicant meeting the requirements.

The agreement between RIL and BMC is currently in process. Once finalized, RIL will submit a detailed design plan outlining the landscaping, facilities, and types of trees to be planted. The project is expected to take around 1.5 years to complete.

In addition to landscaping, RIL will also operate and maintain the recently opened 5.5 km Coastal Road promenade, ensuring the public can continue to enjoy the scenic waterfront space
