Mumbai : The Bombay High Court has restrained Shiv Sena leader and former Congress MP Sanjay Nirupam from making defamatory or communal remarks against Mumbai-based developer M/s Chandiwala Enterprises Pvt Ltd and its directors, Imran Humayun Chandiwala and Anis Humayun Chandiwala.
The order, passed by Justice Riyaz Chagla on August 20, came after the builder approached the court over Nirupam’s statements accusing Muslim-owned firms of carrying out a so-called “housing jihad” in slum redevelopment projects.
At a recent press conference, Nirupam alleged that Muslim-controlled construction companies were attempting to alter Mumbai’s demography by pushing Hindus out of localities like Kurla, Bandra East, Chandivali, Sion-Koliwada, Malad East, and Goregaon East.
Senior advocate Janak Dwarkadas, appearing for the builder, termed the allegations “communal and baseless,” citing documents to show that the claims were factually incorrect.
The court noted Nirupam’s non-cooperation, observing that he had even torn a legal notice delivered to his residence. Justice Chagla said the allegations appeared “prima facie false” and issued a temporary injunction restraining him from repeating such statements until further orders.
The matter is scheduled for the next hearing on September 10, with the court granting Nirupam two weeks to file his response.
