Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked during her weekly public grievance session (Jan Sunwai) at her official residence on Wednesday.
According to BJP leaders, a man posing as a complainant tried to grab the CM’s hand and pull her, before a heavy object—believed to be a table—struck her head, leaving her injured. Security personnel quickly overpowered the attacker and detained him.
CCTV footage released by the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) indicates the suspect had visited the premises a day earlier, raising suspicions of a larger conspiracy. The accused, identified as 41-year-old Rajesh Sakaria from Rajkot, Gujarat, was described by his mother as an “animal lover,” suggesting a possible link to recent debates around stray dog management following a Supreme Court order.
CM Gupta was admitted to hospital for medical observation. The BJP has demanded a comprehensive probe into the incident, questioning whether the assault was politically motivated. Opposition AAP leader Atishi also condemned the attack, stressing that disagreements in a democracy must never lead to violence.
The incident has sparked public concern about the safety of leaders during open forums like Jan Sunwai, with growing calls for tighter security protocols for officials meeting citizens directly.
