Mumbai Rains Halt Central & Harbour Line Trains, Citywide Transport in Chaos

Mumbai : Mumbai’s lifeline came to a grinding halt on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, as torrential rains forced the suspension of suburban train services on both the Central and Harbour lines. Heavy flooding submerged railway tracks between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Thane on the Central line, and near Chunabhatti on the Harbour line, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.

While limited shuttle services are being operated beyond Thane towards Karjat, Kasara, and Khopoli, the city’s transport system has largely collapsed. Western Railway trains remain operational but are running with delays.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai after parts of the city recorded over 300 mm of rainfall in less than 24 hours. Schools, colleges, and government offices have been shut, while road traffic is heavily disrupted due to waterlogging in several areas, including Andheri, Kurla, and Dadar. BEST buses have been diverted, and flights at Mumbai airport are facing delays.

Authorities have set up help desks at major railway stations to assist passengers and are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel. At least seven deaths have been reported due to rain-related incidents in the city, prompting rescue operations across affected areas.
