Mumbai: Maharashtra has reported a worrying surge in mosquito-borne diseases, with 17,281 cases of malaria, dengue, and chikungunya recorded in the past seven months—an average of 82 new infections daily.
Health department data shows malaria cases have risen 16% compared to last year, reaching 11,425, while chikungunya cases jumped 27% to 1,512. Dengue, however, declined slightly with 4,344 cases reported.
Officials said both rural and urban areas are affected, with irregular rainfall creating stagnant water and fuelling mosquito breeding. Traditionally, cases peak in September–October, but the surge has started earlier this year.
Authorities have launched cleaning drives, fever screenings, and awareness campaigns while urging citizens to cover water containers, use repellents and nets, and seek immediate medical care for symptoms like fever, chills, and joint pain.
